Sunflower Playdough

Scented playdough to inspire Spring time planting

Scented playdough to inspire indoor gardening!

I left this provocation out to see if the children fancy planting sunflowers. Along with the book Daisy's Sunflowers which tells the story of how a sunflower seed needs to be planted in the right conditions in order to grow.
Team this up with some lemon scented, peppermint and chocolate playdough which makes a great combination for producing 'pretend' sunflowers.

There are also some great non fiction books on sunflowers. We have a couple of big books which are lovely. They have beautiful illustrations and discuss the life cycle of a sunflower in child friendly language.

Chocolate Playdough
You need
·         450g plain flour
·         230g salt
·         8 tsp cream of tartar
·         5 tbsp cooking oil
·         1 tbsp cocoa powder
·         440ml boiling water

All you do is:

Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil and cocoa powder together in a large bowl. Stir in the water. It may seem sticky to begin with but wait a couple of minutes and it will become gorgeous and stretchy! It smells
good enough to eat! Keep in a sealed bag or box and it will last for ages!

Lemon Playdough

·         230g salt
·         8 tsp cream of tartar
·         5 tbsp cooking oil

·         Lemon essence

Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil together in a large bowl. Add the food colouring to the water and mix into the other ingredients. At this point add the essence. Turn onto a floured surface and knead. If sticky, wait a few minutes and it will turn into a pile of fluffiness! Keep in a sealed bag or box and it will last for ages!
