A Raft for the Billy Goats - STEM

Can you choose suitable materials to build a raft for the Three Billy Goats Gruff to get across the water on?
Maybe this way they can avoid the Troll!

Building a raft for the Billy Goats using loose parts

I left out a variety of different materials and a container of water along with the 3 billy goats to spark some interest.
We had previously started the day off with a story basket based on the Three Billy Goats Gruff. Most children adore puppets and have an amazing connection with them. Although The Girl was not very impressed by the facial expressions on this troll so we brought a substitute in! These books are really great! Nick Sharratt has just re-released this lift the flat series of fairy tales and they come with a cd. The Troll by Julia Donaldson has a fantastic story time which my two loved! Teamed up with some pirates on the search for treasure but end up with a new cook!

They soon got to work selecting and testing materials. We looked at some raft designs on the internet and discussed pros and cons and what rafts are used for.
The Boy was keen to be chief tester! Anywhere water is, he's bound to be close by!

They soon realised after testing the first design that it would need altering due to letting in water!

The Girl decided that her raft needed sides so the goats didn't fall off as well as keeping the water out.

It then needed waterproofing.
I prefer to take a step back and leave them to explore but want them to know that I'm there to join in the fun!

Time to test the rafts! They decided that the goats would have to travel individually as there was only enough room for one at a time. However this then sparked a conversation off about how would the raft get back - and how would it move in the correct direction with only the wind to move it.

The second billy goat is off!

And the last.

They then started on a couple of other designs. Although by this point they had discovered that masking tape was not ideal as when it got damp it started to come unstuck.

And found another use for the straws! Blowing bubbles!
