Exploring 3D Shapes with Kinetic Sand

A selection of beautiful coloured transparent geometric 3D shapes placed on a mirror tile with kinetic sand ready to be explored.

Creating shapes from Kinetic Sand

These 3D shapes are great for introducing geometry. They are perfect for allowing children to explore measurement, area, volume and capacity. Great opportunities for open ended questions!

When light shines through or on them they really stand out and allows children to see all angles and vertices. By placing the provocation on a mirror it allows further exploration.

Kinetic sand is perfect for creating your own 3D shapes as it moulds together perfectly. If you haven't come across it yet then do! It's really amazing! It has similar properties to cornflour and water.

I added some cards which had photographs of real life objects and their shapes (although I didn't get any in the photographs really!). This gave an opportunity to discuss shapes around us in life.

The removable bases allow the shapes to be filled with liquids or solids which is great to create your own 3D shapes.
